The Downing Centre is located at 143-147 Liverpool Street, Sydney. The building has been used as a Courthouse since 1985. It is a historically significant building as it was originally the Mark Foys Department Store, and later, briefly Grace Bros, which has been an architectural landmark since the early 20th Century. It contains many fine examples of design and craftsmanship, including the moulded terracotta external elements, mosaic tiled and terrazzo floors, gilded brass surrounds to show windows, decorative plaster ceilings and wrought iron balustrading. Art Nouveau influences are still evident today in the external and little remaining internal detailing. The Sydney Downing Centre Local Court comprises 15 Local Courtrooms, and the building also houses the Sydney District Court, with another 16 Courtrooms being utilised by the District Court. It is the hub of the Sydney city criminal Courts in particular, and also hears large volumes of civil cases as well.
