Central Local Court is located at 98 Liverpool Street, Sydney. The building has been used as a Courthouse for over a century. It was in fact the first purpose built Courthouse in Sydney, designed by the Colonial Architects Office. The building is heritage listed, and is a good example of a nineteenth century Courthouse style. It is a wonderful example of a classically inspired public building designed in the Federation Free Classical style by James Barnet, the last Colonial Architect, with its construction supervised by WL Vernon, who was the first Government Architect.

Central Local Court deals with many types of matters, including more serious (“strictly indictable”) matters which begin in the Local Court but are later transferred, following the “committal” stage, to the District Court or Supreme Court. Serious matters of this type may be transferred from other Local Courts within the Sydney metropolitan area to Sydney CBD’s Central Local Court for the “committal proceedings”.
